Many thanks to the wonderful women of the SenBetas list: Sheila, Marion, shiredancer, gardendoor, and earth2skye for the quick and very helpful beta. All mistakes herein are mine.
My first plot bunny for these prompts was some horribly dark and depressing piece where Blair was working as a prostitute and he and Jim were always fighting about it. I beat that one off with a stick and then got this one, thankfully. That first one's still sitting back there, though, gnawing at me now and again. Send more sticks.

| How do you avoid repetition in your writing?
Recently I've noticed an annoying tendency on my part to repeat phrases and actions from one fic to another. Things like, "Apprehension coiled in his belly", or how it seems that every time I've got Jim comforting Blair I've got him rubbing Blair's scalp. It's the worst with sex scenes, although I've noticed it in non-sex scenes as well. But I don't notice it when I'm writing; at that point I'm just trying to think of a good way to say or describe something, and then the lightbulb goes on and it comes to me and I write it down. Then later, when I'm editing something or going back and forth between WIPs, I realize that the reason the lightbulb went on was because I'D ALREADY USED THE DAMN PHRASE! Seriously, it's driving me nuts...
I know one option is to make better use of my thesaurus, but that only can take me so far. I really don't think "snowy as bed linen" is better than "white as a sheet", in most cases. Fine for a seduction scene, maybe; not so great if you're trying to write horror or suspense...
